Raheem Devaughn - Love Behind The Melody

DeVaughn has been categorized amongst the likes of Dwele, Van Hunt, D'Angelo, Marvin Gaye, Donnie Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. His sound is so unique yet simple and while he does not boast the world's greatest singing voice, he knows how to use the voice he has and his arrangements are cognizant of an experienced gentleman who has lived in an era the precedes him.

His song "Woman" received a nomination for best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the 2008 Grammy Awards.

Drumcorps - Grist

(11.12.06) There is so much breakcore and speed metal on Aaron Spectre's debut release as Drumcorps that it takes the muscular lifting of two labels to get the record out. Spectre's lifelong fascination with the howling tsunami of grindcore is tapped for Grist, and the resultant blending and fracturing via a rack of virtual machines produces a collection of blistering breakcore tracks that are equal parts Agoraphobic Nosebleed and Bong-Ra.

While Spectre doesn't quite go to the Agoraphobic Nosebleed extreme of seconds-long tracks, he compresses a few down to brutal collisions of howls and beats. "Grainbeast" is a maelstrom of vocal effects, a single voice turned into a whirlwind of noise that elongates into a fury of warped organ notes and skittering words; while "Saddest RMX" hammers its way across the stage like a John Zorn/Mike Patton improvisational concussion blast. "Terrible Things," at a minute and a half, spends part of that swirling through Air Inspector territory (one of Spectre's less brutalizing aliases) before snarling up into a Godflesh-style intro that throws the listener right into the heavy guitar work of "Forgive and Forget."

The longer tracks wear their influences clearly. "Botch Up and Die" is a tongue-in-cheek reference to '90s hardcore band, Botch; while the hand percussion and technoid rhythms of "Pig Destroyer Destroyer" throw a bone to the bass-less Pig Destroyer. "Botch Up and Die," the opening salvo of Grist, seems like a true-to-form grindcore song: foaming vocals, twisting guitars, hammering drums. But Spectre starts to sneak in breakcore effects by slurring the drums, tossing down bleats of noise, and by staggering beats into chopped dub echoes. "Pig Destroyer Destroyer" eschews the pummeling sound of the double-bass for atmospheric burps of noise and synthesized chords. The guitar is sampled, thrashed and looped back on itself like a time-delay Möbius loop until it breaks open a wall in the Time/Space Continuum, releasing an inter-dimensional howler and an Nth dimension breakbeat programmer who transform the song into a caterwauling anthem of grinding breakcore.

The beauty of Grist is how Spectre has found a commonality between the heavy thrash of the metal and the cryptic data overload of breakcore to produce tracks that so cleverly belong to either camp. "Incarnate" leaps and howls like a demonic goat whacked out on meth but manages to do backflips with breakbeat tear-downs between verses. "Worse" begins as a percussive interplay between a couple of snare drummers, adds samples and some shortwave interference, before layering the breakbeats on top of the stick work. "Time" tags in, stealing the percussion and mood of "Worse" as the rhythm section for an escalating battle between grindcore vocals, speed guitar and thundering bass.

Grist is one of those records you don't realize you've been waiting for until it kicks you in the face. Aaron Spectre's homage to grindcore and fascination with breakcore results in a record that takes no prisoners and offers no excuses for its intensity. You either dance or die with Drumcorps. Some days, we need this sort of adrenaline rush to jump-start our nervous systems. Grist is the juice that will power your rocket. Suck it down.

Ain't A Damn Thing Changed

Ain't a Damn Thing Changed is the second album from the East Coast rap duo Nice & Smooth.
Nice & Smooth returned for a second album that injected a much-needed and entirely welcome sense of the absurd into the generally far too austere and sincere New York City underground hip-hop community, which has traditionally sacrificed humor for hardcore technique when it comes to rhyming. Greg Nice and Smooth B., however, are often downright silly and goofball on Ain't a Damn Thing Changed. Despite the conscientious-sounding title, there is very little on the album that is concerned with anything other than, first, rocking the microphone, and second, timing the punch line perfectly. There are certainly serious themes tossed out from time to time. The major hit "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow" -- which is simply the track of Tracy Chapman's sober, solemn "Fast Car" matched with the duo's superimposed rhyming -- makes references to guns, violence, and drug abuse, and several of the other songs contain similar allusions. But far more frequently, the album is characterized by a reckless old-school (think Audio Two) sense of fun, with loony, stream-of-consciousness lyrics that are most interested in dropping the other shoe, shouted sing-along choruses ("Sex, Sex, Sex," "Paranoia"), insanely catchy vocal hooks ("Sometimes," "One, Two and One More Makes Three"), and production filled with bouncy beats and cartoonish, electronic keyboards. The ubiquitous presence of fully harmonized (and occasionally out-of-tune) background vocals is another characteristic that gives the album a jarringly whimsical quality that most rap crews at the time would never have come within earshot of. A Partridge Family sample even plays a substantial role in "Hip Hop Junkies," and the theme song to Sanford & Son is the basic track of "Step by Step." Perhaps their sense of humor, to a certain extent, obscures the straight-up rhyming skills that the duo possesses. Greg Nice's abrupt, roughneck dramatics juxtaposed against Smooth B.'s serene, butter-slick delivery strikes the perfect vocal balance, and the posse cut, "Down the Line," which includes Gang Starr's Guru (perhaps the preeminent underground rapper), proves that they can bring it rugged and raw when they so decide. But because the duo is willing to poke fun at themselves and their craft so unsparingly, the album is completely addictive, in the same way that sugar is, because it is an energy boost and instantly brings into relief an entirely different side of rap: one that doesn't take itself so seriously.

Evil Empire-Rage Against The Machine

The overall sound of the album differed from the group's other three albums: their previous self-titled debut, The Battle of Los Angeles and Renegades three years later. Stylewise, the album continues to blur the line between rap and rock, but unlike the prior (and subsequent) albums' large and looming heavy metal riffs dominating, the album more involves the rhythms and Zack de la Rocha's rap-style vocals. The bizarre time signature that concludes the end of "Year Of Tha Boomerang" is the prime example, though the style can be easily seen on (roughly) 8 of the 11 tracks. To some this proved to be a more popular style, to others it was less favorable. The track "Bulls on Parade" became the first single and, as with their debut, five singles were released in total.

Tracklist:

1.People of the Sun – 2:30
2.Bulls on Parade – 3:52
3.Vietnow – 4:40
4.Revolver – 5:30

In 1995, the group released their debut single "Lifestyles Of The Rich & Shameless", charting on the Billboard Hot 100. The release landed them a record deal with Uptown Records. The group contributed a single to the Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood soundtrack, titled "Renee". The song became a major hit, breaking into the Top 40 on the Hot 100 chart. The single also reached Gold status in 1996. On June 4, 1996, they released their debut album Legal Drug Money. The work was highly acclaimed, and the album featured five Hot 100 hits, including their past singles "Lifestyles of the Rich & Shameless", "Renee", as well as "Music Makes Me High", "Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz" and "Get Up". The album was certified Gold by the RIAA in late 1996. Their second album, Love, Peace & Nappiness, was released on June 17, 1997 on Uptown/Universal Records. It featured another Hot 100 hit single, "Me & My Crazy World". One of the most famous songs on the album was the posse-cut "Beasts From The East", featuring A+, Redman and Canibus. The album wasn't as acclaimed as their debut, but fared well commercially, reaching Gold status in late 1997.

Lets Get Free

Critically acclaimed upon its first release, Let's Get Free was called a "return to politically conscious rap" and "the most politically conscious rap since Public Enemy"; the duo's messages also earned them favorable comparisons with Brand Nubian and X-Clan. The album's lyrics, performed in front of sparse beats that many critics derided as a "dull musical backdrop", are startlingly direct, militant and confrontational. M-1 and stic.man excoriate media, the music industry, politicians and poverty, and rap about Afrocentrism and Black Power. Rolling Stone gave the album four stars and lauded its equation of "classrooms with jail cells, the projects with killing fields and everything from water to television with conduits for brainwashing by the system"

S.O.S.A. Discography

Doe or Die is the debut album by New York emcee AZ. Released in 1995, AZ was introduced to the world in Nas' Illmatic in 1994. Often regarded as a companion piece to Illmatic, Doe or Die is considered by many critics and hip-hop fans as a classic album of east coast hip hop.

  1. "Intro"
  2. "Uncut Raw"
  3. "Gimmie Yours (Feat. Nas)"
  4. "Ho-Happy Jackie"
  5. "Rather Unique (Feat. Pete Rock)"
  6. "I Feel For You (Feat. Erika Scott)"
  7. "Sugar Hill (Feat. Miss Jones)"
  8. "Mo Money, Mo Murder(Feat. Nas)"
  9. "Doe or Die"
  10. "We Cant Win (Feat. Amar)
  11. "Your World Don't Stop"
  12. "Sugar Hill (remix)"

Pieces of a Man is AZ's second album. The album is vastly different from his debut, Doe Or Die. It contained fun, party tracks as opposed to Doe or Die's grimey, street oriented lyrics and production.

  1. "New Life(Album Intro)"
  2. "Im Known"
  3. "How You Livin (Feat. Nas)"
  4. "Trading Places"
  5. "Whats The Deal"
  6. "Love is Love"
  7. "The Payback"
  8. "Just Because"
  9. "S.O.S.A."
  10. "It's a Boy Thing
  11. "Pieces of A (Black) Man"
  12. "Last Dayz (Feat. Monifa)"
  13. "Whatever Happened (Feat. RZA)"
  14. "Trail of the Century (Feat. Foxy Brown)"
  15. "Betcha Dont Know"

S.O.S.A. is a promotional album made to promote AZ's then-upcoming album 9 Lives. It features 10 tracks, and has songs that are not found on AZ's other albums along with songs that ended up making it on the 9 Lives album. It was distributed in the streets, as AZ was a free agent at the time and was in the process of finding a new label after Noo Trybe Records let him go.
  1. "Intro"
  2. "I Don't Give a Fuck Now"
  3. "Problems"
  4. "Bodies Gotta Get Caught"
  5. "Let Us Toast"
  6. "Platinum Bars"
  7. "Love Me in Your Special Way"
  8. "That's Real" (feat. Beanie Sigel)
  9. "Animal Skit (You Ain't From Brooklyn)"
  10. "It's Like That" (feat. Animal)

9 Lives is AZ's third album, under the Motown imprint. Most of his fans call it his worst album to date, with the belief that the disc's production and AZ's lyrics were bland and unoriginal. Overall, 9 Lives shows AZ trying harder with a more radio-friendly style to stay with one label instead of being dropped from his contract in the way that he was in the past.

  1. "Intro"
  2. "What Cha Day About (Feat. Ali Vegas)"
  3. "I Dont Give A Fuck"
  4. "At Night"
  5. "AZ's Back"
  6. "Problems"
  7. "Everything's Everything (Feat. Joe)"
  8. "Thats Real (Feat. Beanie Sigel)"
  9. "What Yall Niggas What (Feat. Foxy Brown)"
  10. "Let's Toast"
  11. "How Many Wonna (Feat. Amil)"
  12. "Love Me"
  13. "Quiet Money TBS"
  14. "Outro"

After two albums that received indifferent responses (1998's Pieces of a Man and 2001's 9 Lives), Aziatic is considered AZ's comeback album, which restored his credibility.. The album features AZ's flow and style over melodic, soulful production. It featured a duet between AZ and long-time friend and collaborator, Nas, "The Essence", which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. Aziatic also has some of AZ's most landmark tracks, including "Wanna Be There", "Fan Mail", "A-1 Performance", and "Paradise (Life)". Aziatic is considered by many critics and hip hop fans as a classic album of East Coast hip hop.

  1. "Once Again"
  2. "A-1 Performance"
  3. "Wonna Be There"
  4. "Take It Off"
  5. "The Essence (Feat. Nas)"
  6. "Hands In The Air (Feat. Dj Rogers, Jr., Nikko)"
  7. "Fan Mail "
  8. "Paradise (Life)"
  9. "Take Care of Me"
  10. "Im Back (Feat. Daddy Rose)"
  11. "Hustler (Feat. Animal, Trav)"
  12. "Rebirth"
  13. "Aziatic (Outro)"
  14. "Doing Me"

Final Call was rumored to be AZ's last or second to last album before retirement. The album was going to be released in stores in 2004, but it was leaked onto the internet long before release date. Because of feedback on the internet regarding how much of a disappointment it was as a follow-up the Aziatic, AZ decided to ditch the album and leave it only as a bootleg available only on the internet. He ended up recording an all-new album, A.W.O.L in 2005. Producers for the album are unknown.

A.W.O.L. is an album by rapper AZ. It was recorded after
Final Call, an album that was shelved because of a two month early leak on the Internet. Because of constant record label problems, A.W.O.L. is the first AZ album which was released on his own Quiet Money Records imprint. In a couple of months after the release, A.W.O.L. 1.5, which included a bonus disc featuring accapella and instrumental versions to the songs on A.W.O.L., was released.

The Chef In The Kitchen

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is the influential east coast hip hop album debut by rapper Raekwon, released in 1995 on Loud Records. It is considered to be one of the best hip-hop albums of the '90s and a pioneer of the Mafioso rap genre.

Lavish living and the crime underworld are referenced throughout, with the mystique of the Wu-Tang Clan deepened by the adoption of crime boss aliases and the crew name Wu-Gambinos. This album is commonly referred to as "The Purple Tape", because the original cassette's plastic was entirely purple
